Biography:

Auguste-Nicolas Cain (1821–1894) was one of the leading French animal sculptors of the 19th century. A pupil of François Rude, then influenced by Pierre-Jules Mêne, he specialised in the representation of wild and domestic animals, treated with naturalistic precision. His works were regularly exhibited at the Salons from 1846 onwards.

The Susse Frères foundry, founded in Paris in the early 19th century, is one of the most renowned publishers of art bronzes. It distributed numerous models by Cain and other animal sculptors, ensuring a wide distribution of these bronzes among enthusiasts and collectors.

The model Le Réveil was exhibited at the 1883 Salon and was then included in the Susse Frères catalogue, which produced various editions of it in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
