Hotel or desk bell in antique patinated bronze, circa 1860–1880.
The domed base, decorated with a guilloché scale pattern, is surmounted by a figurine in the round depicting a man in 18th-century attire, wearing a tricorne, raising a glass in one hand and holding a bouquet in the other.
The internal mechanism operates four acorn-shaped chimes (a refined yet invisible detail), suspended from four flexible brass blades, producing a beautiful resonant tone. Marked “DC” on the base (beneath the figure), probably the monogram of the founder or workshop.
A rare object, both utilitarian and decorative, reflecting the refined accessories found in 19th-century hotels and shops.
Attention campanophile collectors! Indeed, campanology is the science or study of bells… ;-)
