Biography:
Born in 1964 in Mbuji Mayi, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jean-Pierre Katembwe (also known as Jeampy Katembwe) creates deliberately minimalist works, with simple strokes, giving priority to dialogue with the viewer. A rare feature of his technique: he uses Nescafé to give his oil paintings their brown tone.
Known for his vibrant, expressive art, his works reflect the cultural richness and social realities of his native country. Katembwe developed a passion for art at an early age, drawing inspiration from everyday life, lush nature and the traditions of the DRC. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa, where he perfected his unique style. His paintings are characterised by bold use of colour, dynamic forms and a deep sensitivity to social and political themes.
His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, highlighting not only his talent, but also the stories and struggles of his people. Jean Pierre Katembwe continues to live and work in the DRC, actively contributing to his country's artistic and cultural scene.
