Biography:
Joé Descomps (1869 Clermont-Ferrand - 1950 Paris), born Emmanuel-Jules-Joseph Descomps, was a sculptor, chiseller and master goldsmith who studied under Louis-Auguste Hiolin and Alexandre Falguière.
After the First World War, he adopted the name Descomps-Cormier or simply Cormier to sign his works, as is the case for this sculpture.
He was present at the Chicago exhibition in 1893. He worked with Frédéric Boucheron.
He had been a member of the ‘Sociétaire des artistes français' since 1883 and exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1891 to 1937; he was mentioned in 1898, won his third medal in 1921, second in 1925 and first in 1928. In 1911, a small terracotta statuette signed by him was offered to subscribers to Félix Juven's publications. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour by decree on 3 April 1929. His workshop was in La Charité-sur-Loire.
