The Maîtrise de Nimy, founded in 1943 under the direction of Raoul Godfroid, was an artistic movement aiming to elevate ceramics to the rank of art. Louis Waem was a member of this group of artists, along with Fernande Massart, Georges Destrebecq, René Lemaigre, Pierre Monnaie, André Hupet, Irène Zacq and Geneviève Noé. The group gained international recognition with exhibitions in New York, Amsterdam, Cairo, Milan and Lisbon, as well as a visit to Mons by Rainier III, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, in 1947. They also won first prize at the Milan Triennale in 1948. The group disbanded after the final closure of the Nimy factory in 1950.
