Oscar Berchmans, Art Nouveau bronze seal/stamp/sculpture, ca 1900

Bronze seal or stamp made by Oscar Berchmans around 1900 in the spirit of Viennese bronzes.

The object adopts the characteristic lines of the Art Nouveau style, with a relief decoration incorporating organic and naturalistic forms. Designed as a utilitarian object (note to sigillophiles), it also bears witness to the decorative work that Berchmans carried out on small bronze pieces alongside his monumental works.

Biography:

Oscar Évariste Berchmans (1869–1950) was a Belgian sculptor and medallist active in Belgium (Liège) around 1900. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Liège and then in Brussels, he worked with Prosper Drion, Léon Mignon and Paul De Vigne. From the 1890s onwards, he was actively involved in the development of the Art Nouveau movement in Liège, collaborating with architects such as Victor Rogister and Paul Jaspar, as well as artists such as Auguste Donnay and Armand Rassenfosse.

He created monumental sculptures and bas-reliefs for public buildings as well as decorative elements for furniture, notably bronze ornaments with floral or animal motifs. From 1919 to 1934, he taught sculpture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège.
