Biography:
Roger Nellens was a Belgian painter, born in Liège in 1937 and died in Knokke-Heist in 2021. He was self-taught and a close friend of Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely.
He began painting in 1960, influenced by Constant Permeke and also P. Delvaux, from whom he received advice and support. He began painting trains and signals.
From 1969, his "Machines imaginaires" were created. Extract from the press: "R.N. belongs, with Picabia, Duchamp, Ernst and Tinguely, among others, to a group of artists who chase the delirium of machines. What was originally intended to help us has gradually been supplanted by man', and with Roger Nellens. machines lose their aggressiveness, he illustrates their poetic dimension and has thus constructed a very personal iconography.
